SNF im­pact study on the ef­fec­tive­ness of math­e­mat­ics teach­ing

In col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Uni­ver­sity of Bern (De­part­ment of Eco­nom­ics) and the NGO Con­sciente in El Sal­vador, the SNF re­search project QUEST, led by Prof. Dr. Aymo Brunetti, aims to gen­er­ate knowl­edge on the de­sign of ef­fec­tive in-​service train­ing pro­grammes for math­e­mat­ics teach­ers in order to im­prove stu­dent learn­ing out­comes.

In col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Uni­ver­sity of Bern (De­part­ment of Eco­nom­ics) and the NGO Con­sciente in El Sal­vador, the SNF re­search project QUEST, led by Prof. Dr. Aymo Brunetti, aims to gen­er­ate knowl­edge on the de­sign of ef­fec­tive in-​service train­ing pro­grammes for math­e­mat­ics teach­ers in order to im­prove stu­dent learn­ing out­comes. To this end, three CPD in­ter­ven­tion units (ped­a­gog­i­cal knowl­edge, con­tent knowl­edge, and ped­a­gog­i­cal con­tent knowl­edge, a com­bi­na­tion of both in­puts) are being de­vel­oped and eval­u­ated.

The IZB is in­volved in the de­vel­op­ment of the learn­ing ma­te­ri­als in col­lab­o­ra­tion with Kurt Hess, Pro­fes­sor of Math­e­mat­i­cal Think­ing and Learn­ing at the PH Zug, and acts at var­i­ous in­ter­faces of the re­search project. Spe­cial em­pha­sis is placed on tak­ing into ac­count the per­spec­tive(s) of all stake­hold­ers in­volved in the project, and in par­tic­u­lar the con­tin­u­ous ex­change with Con­sciente seems in­dis­pens­able for the suc­cess of the re­search project. The NGO's ex­pe­ri­ence in the field of (crit­i­cal) ed­u­ca­tion, their un­der­stand­ing of the local school con­text, learn­ing ma­te­ri­als and in­fra­struc­ture, en­sure that the learn­ing ma­te­ri­als are co­her­ent to the so­cial re­al­ity of El Sal­vador.
