The IBB's work can be structured into the following fields:

• Research: basic research, applied research, and evaluation research
• Consultancy: mainly evaluations, needs assessments, conceptions, consultancy, and expertises
• Networks: chairing professional networks in research and practice as well as organising conferences
• Training and Development: initial training, continuous professional development, and coaching for all agents at school and education authorities
• Publications: editorship (e.g. of a book series and a loose-leaf edition for school leadership), membership in editorial boards of journals and authorship of German-language as well as international publication
