Cop­ing with De­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion Project (CODEP)

Ed­u­ca­tion com­po­nent to im­prove the ef­fec­tive­ness of na­tional and in­ter­na­tional ef­forts to tackle de­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion in Mon­go­lia

The project aims to in­crease Mon­go­lia's ca­pac­ity to im­prove the ef­fec­tive­ness of na­tional and in­ter­na­tional ef­forts to tackle de­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion and pro­mote sus­tain­able liveli­hoods in arid and semi-​arid areas. The ed­u­ca­tion com­po­nent fo­cuses on:

  1. The pro­mo­tion of eco-​schools
  2. Rais­ing pub­lic aware­ness about de­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion
  3. The de­vel­op­ment of an En­vi­ron­men­tal En­cy­clopae­dia

The IZB sup­ports CODEP/SDC in its ef­forts to es­tab­lish eco-​schools. These make stu­dents from rural areas aware of the need for sus¬tain­able de­vel­op­ment, and pro­vide them with the com­pe­tences nec­es­sary to make use of tech­nolo­gies and tech­niques that re­duce the progress of de­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion once they enter the world of work. Tasks in­clude:

  • Up­dat­ing the ex­ist­ing eco-​school con­cept in Mon­go­lia
  • Elab­o­rat­ing the CODEP eco-​school strat­egy, 2012/16
  • Ca­pac­ity build­ing for the NGOs who work with eco-​schools and for local teach­ers
  • Help­ing the eco-​school net­work be­come a na­tion­wide move­ment
  • Pro­vid­ing in­puts and rec­om­men­da­tions to the ex­perts' team work­ing on the prepa­ra­tion of learn­ing ma­te­ri­als on de­ser­ti­fi­ca­tion
  • Ad­vis­ing on how to make avail­able a wider range of tools for pub­lic aware­ness
