Wheat
The wheat originally comes from Transcaucasia, which lies in eastern Turkey and is one of the oldest crops. The wheat most commonly grown in Switzerland is bread wheat. Wheat produces many different foods. Among other things, most breads and pastries contain wheat, and wheat is also present in cornflakes and pasta.

In 2017, a total of 476,000 tonnes of wheat were in Switzerland produced for humans. Gross food consumption in 2017 was 67.1 kilograms of wheat per inhabitant. Wheat self-sufficiency in Switzerland is 52.7 percent. This means that half of the wheat consumed in Switzerland comes from abroad.
