Specialised Upper Secondary School, FMS
Specialised Upper Secondary School (Fachmittelschule, FMS)
The FMS offers a third educational option alongside apprenticeships and baccalaureate school. It provides a more in-depth general education at middle school level and enables students to gain a practical education in their chosen professional field at the same time. After the 3rd year of secondary school, the FMS guides students to the specialised upper secondary certificate in the fields of education, healthcare or social work. The specialised upper secondary certificate (Fachmittelschulausweis) entitles students to enter a professional college (Höhere Fachschulen in Zug or general information - link leads to German site), to study for the specialised baccalaureate in selected vocational fields, or to study for the adult baccalaureate.
Specialised baccalaureate (Fachmaturität, FM)
It is possible to gain the specialised baccalaureate in the field of education by taking an additional semester of general education and writing a specialised baccalaureate dissertation. The specialised baccalaureate in education entitles students to enter the teacher training Colleges, for example in Zug (link leads to German site), Lucerne and Schwyz without having to sit an entrance test. In the field of healthcare, the specialised baccalaureate consists of a 26-week practical placement and writing a specialised baccalaureate dissertation. The specialised baccalaureate in healthcare entitles students to study at a university of applied sciences, opening the door to a wide variety of healthcare professions. In the field of social work, the specialised baccalaureate consists of a 12-month practical placement (at least 6 months of which must have a social focus) and writing a specialised baccalaureate dissertation. The specialised baccalaureate in social work entitles students to enrol for social welfare studies at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). In addition, universities of applied sciences are increasingly ready to admit graduates with a specialised baccalaureate to study in a wide variety of other vocational fields, too. Via Passerelle, students can also study at the University or ETH.
