Universities of Applied Sciences («Fachhochschulen»)
Even after completion of basic vocational education and training, a young person can still start an academic career if he wants. There are seven public universities of applied sciences (UASs), or so-called «Fachhochschulen». They offer practical university-level courses.

University («Universität»)
There are eleven universities in Switzerland. To gain admission to a university, a student must have completed secondary school with a Federal School Leaving Certificate. Most universities offer the degrees of bachelor (after three years) and master (after two further years).
