Cross-border commuters are subject to the compulsory health insurance in Switzerland. Those members of their families domiciled in an EU country, Iceland or Norway are also required to take out this insurance.

Cross-border commuters and members of their families not engaged in work (in Switzerland) who come from Germany, France, Italy and Austria may also choose between the Swiss health insurance scheme and one in their own country.

Whichever way they decide, they are required to file an application to the municipality of the place of work of the employed person.
