Anyone considering adoption should go to the Advisory Centre for Child and Adult Protection (Amt für Kindes- und Erwachsenenschutz). It is this body which discusses the effects of adoption on the individual and the family with the future adoptive parents and ensures that all legal requirements have been met.

In Switzerland it is possible to adopt:

• a child from Switzerland
• a child from abroad (international adoption)
• a step-child
• an adult
• an adult step-child
