New arrivals must register with the Immigration Office within 14 days of entry to Switzerland or when moving to a different canton. Non EU/EFTA nationals must also obtain permission to move to another canton.

Immigration of EU and EFTA Nationals
Thanks to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, EU and EFTA nationals, regardless of their qualifications, are granted easy access to the Swiss labour market. They have the right to enter and stay in Switzerland, provided they satisfy the requirements provided for in the Agreement.

Immigration of Non-EU/EFTA-country Nationals
Residence regulations for non-EU member states are restrictive. Only highly qualified or specialised management personnel are eligible for a work permit. Moreover, Swiss employers who intend to employ a citizen from a non-EU/EFTA state need to prove to the authorities that no qualified person in Switzerland or in any of the EU/EFTA states can be found to perform the respective job. Exceptions are made with respect to employees transferred within an international company. Applications for non-EU/EFTA nationals have to be filed by their future employers to:

It is here that you can find out information and be advised in various languages on everyday issues. The Immigration Advisory Service works on behalf of the canton and the different municipalities regardless of the immigrants' politics and religion.
