Unemployment and Dismissal

Unemployment insurance provides benefits in the case of loss of employment, shortened working hours, lack of employment as a result of weather conditions and insolvency on the part of the employer. This insurance also pays for re-integration measures. All persons in gainful employment are obliged to contribute to the unemployment insurance scheme with the exception of some family members of persons working in the agricultural sector and persons who have reached retirement age. Self-employed people are not covered by unemployment insurance. More information can be found on: link to admin.ch.

In the case of dismissal the employer must consider various points:

  • Employees must be informed of various points, too (duty of care).
  • Accident cover insurance ends 30 days after the termination of the contract of   employment. The employee may, however, get cover against accidents from his health insurance or a specially agreed insurance with his previous accident insurance company. The law pertaining to compulsory health insurance requires the employer to inform the employee about this.

It is the duty of the dismissed employee to look for another job as soon as he has been given notice of dismissal and he must be able to prove such when applying for a daily allowance from unemployment insurance. The dismissed employee must be given half a day off each week to be able to look for new employment.

As soon as the former employee has registered with the unemployment insurance, the employer must truthfully complete the "Employee Certificate" as sent from the unemployment office and return it with the necessary documentation.
